
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is popular for her social activism, acting skills, and her ability to rhyme. At the age of 8 young when she was eight, a Muslim cousin named her Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah was a singer in the choir of the church of Shiloh located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her first public performance when she sang "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a musical production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah was motivated by her mother who was in constant contact with the music and students. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey who is known as D.J. Mark the 45 King to appear at a dance school.
